Overcoming Fear of Performing
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
Throughout middle school, high school, and now into college, I’ve always been a performer. I love acting on stage in front of an audience. But there was a time when performing was encompassed by so much fear and nervousness about messing up in front of an audience. I was afraid of making a mistake or forgetting a line or coming on stage at the wrong time.
There was one show in particular where I was so excited for the show, and it felt like my biggest show yet. The crew and I had worked so hard to get there, and then on opening night, right before the show, I was so, so nervous. I got a little bit ill, my hands were shaking, I was sweating, and I just felt like I couldn’t do anything. And then, once I got on stage, everything went great. I was able to remember all my lines, and it felt like one of the best performances I had given as this character.
However, after the show, even though I was proud of what I had just done, I was a little disconcerted about how nervous I had felt before. And I didn’t want to feel like that again before future shows. The morning after, I thought about Sunday School. Once a week, I go to Christian Science Sunday School, and I meet with the teacher and other students in my age group. We discuss our weekly Bible Lesson and the Bible stories that are a part of that Lesson. We talk about how these ideas can help us solve problems in our everyday lives.
One story that my Sunday School teacher had told me came to mind, and it helped in overcoming fear in this situation. One of their friends was a pianist, and every time she would go on stage to perform, she would love everybody in the room. Even if she hadn’t practiced as much as she’d wanted to or wasn’t as comfortable in the setting, she made a point to think about every person in the room as an individual she loved and cared about.
The next night, I came out with that mindset to love every single person in the theater. And I felt so confident and comfortable going on stage. And then the day after that, for the next show, I felt so great. It felt freeing to be overcoming fear. And I’ve been taking the same approach ever since.
Now into college, I’m a person who other people rely on to be comfortable and confident on stage and backstage and before a show. I love to help other people in overcoming fear and be someone to lean on when they’re nervous. I’m so grateful for all the lessons I’ve learned in Christian Science Sunday School.
