“There Is Light”: How Prayer for Depression Lifted the Darkness

Healing Testimony

As a high school student, Kim experienced a sudden and inexplicable period of darkness. She felt completely alone, as if her life didn’t matter. Raised in Christian Science, Kim realized she could reach out to her Father-Mother God for help and turn to prayer for depression.

Words from a hymn by Mary Baker Eddy reminded her that God was guiding the way, and that nothing could prevent her from doing good for others. Watch the video to learn how turning to prayer for depression lifted the darkness and showed Kim a way into the light.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:

A few weeks ago, I was in church, singing a hymn. There’s a line in there that really did help change my life. This was a good time ago, when I was in high school. I probably had a typical high school experience. I was a fairly good student. I was involved in some extracurricular activities. I had a couple of very good friends. Everything was going pretty well.

And then, out of the blue, I hit a period of darkness, inexplicably. There wasn’t an event that I can think of that brought it on. I suddenly felt alone, completely alone. It was as if my life didn’t matter. I was just under a cloud in a dark place. And I just plowed forward. I probably seemed normal to people. I didn’t tell my friends and pretended like things were okay.

I was raised as a Christian Scientist, and I learned from a child that we are all the perfect children of an all-loving God who loves and protects us. We talk about our Father-Mother God. And I realized it was about time for me to turn to my Father-Mother God for help.

I opened a Christian Science hymnal, and I came to a hymn that Mary Baker Eddy wrote. She also wrote Science and Health and is the founder of Christian Science. And these are the lines that struck me. It was simple: “My prayer, some daily good to do to thine, for thee. An offering pure of love, whereto God leadeth me.”

I thought, “Okay, that’s my prayer. I can do that.” Every day, I can wake up and find a way to be loving to other people, to bring some love and light to other people’s lives. And I remember the first morning I headed out to school, and I was friendly and warm with everyone and looked for situations where I could be helpful. I was just trying to do some daily good. That was my only goal.

And then one day, probably a couple of weeks later, I got up and realized I felt fine, and I’d been feeling fine for a while. That darkness completely left me, and it’s never come back again. I’ve had challenges in my life where I’ve sought help, but now I know the source of where to get my help. I hope this might help others who have suffered from a sense of darkness or depression, to know there is light and that we deserve to be in the light.

How can we find light through prayer?

Kim’s healing began when she shifted her focus away from fear and darkness and toward expressing God’s love in practical ways. Rather than accepting feelings of isolation as part of her true identity, she turned to prayer for depression and listened for God’s guidance.

Like Kim, many people have found that turning to God and expressing more love can bring purpose, peace, and spiritual light. Christian Science teaches that God, divine Love, never abandons His children and that spiritual light is always available to guide and comfort us.

As we learn more about our relationship with God, burdens can begin to lift. Prayer helps us see ourselves and others more clearly, recognize our spiritual worth, and discover that darkness does not have the final word. Kim’s experience is one example of how turning to God can bring renewed purpose, peace, and healing.

Where can I hear more testimonies?

You’re warmly invited to a Wednesday prayer gathering at a Christian Science church—here in Southern California or anywhere in the world. Each week, communities come together to explore a fresh healing topic and share how Christian Science is making a difference in daily life.

During this uplifting service, you’ll hear readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy—a companion to the Bible that explains how spiritual healing was demonstrated in the past and how those same truths bring healing today. The meeting also includes hymns, quiet prayer, and inspiring testimonies of healing.
