As the young president of a restaurant company, Mike was challenged to stand on principle in business during a tense board meeting. The directors were pushing to boost stock value by reporting higher earnings—at the expense of employee raises and bonuses.

Though he knew putting profits above employees was wrong, Mike felt intimidated by the seasoned executives around him. Standing on Principle in Business

At one point in my career, I was a young president of a publicly held restaurant company. I was in a fairly contentious board meeting, and the directors—who were also major shareholders of the company—needed to increase the value of their stock for the quarter by reporting higher earnings. They thought the way to do that was to freeze the well-deserved wage increases and bonuses of the employees. 

I didn’t know how to respond. These were accomplished executives of many other businesses. And I was in my young 30s and fairly intimidated by this group. I knew it was not right to satisfy a short-term need of these shareholders by leveraging that on the shoulders of the employees. It was not the principle that I believed in. 

In Christian Science, Principle is a synonym for God. As God’s likeness, I reflect that Principle. So pausing and thinking about things, I finally said, “This is not right. There’s no way we can do this and expect to have good long-term results.” And I said, “I just can’t go along with that decision. If that’s what you want to do, you’re going to have to do it without me.”

They asked me to step out of the room, and I did, and during that time I really was deep in prayer: “Father, I know the right way wins the right of way. I know that Principle will prevail.” About 20 minutes later, I was called back in, and they said, “We’re going to retract our request.” It was wonderful. That quarter, we had the highest sales ever, the highest profits ever. 

We can never be afraid to stand on Principle and turn to that guiding Principle whenever there’s a need. That law, that rule, informed the rest of my career for my entire life.
