Healing Testimony
An art exhibit rejection became an unexpected turning point in Nancy’s creative journey—one that opened the door to deeper purpose through divine guidance. For many artists, one of the greatest challenges is navigating rejection in a competitive field. Early in her career, Nancy experienced this firsthand when she was turned down for an art exhibit she’d deeply hoped to join.

Art Exhibit Setback Led to Inspiration

For many artists, one of the hardest things is dealing with a steady flow of rejection and disappointment. It can feel like a very competitive field, competing for a limited number of opportunities. That’s how it can feel; that’s not the actual spiritual fact in a career in the arts. And I had to learn this lesson early in my career. I’d just gotten out of grad school and there was a big festival art exhibit that I really wanted to be juried into. I really thought this was the right spot for me. You take all your work down there and you leave it and then you wait to hear.
And I didn’t make it. I didn’t get in, and I was really devastated by this because I thought it was just perfect for me, and it was prestigious on a local level. I called a Christian Science practitioner, an individual who is there full-time to help in your spiritual progress and pray for you. And they were just so helpful in helping me see that my life was God-directed and my inspiration came from divine Mind, which is another name for God. And that, as a Christian Scientist, the most important thing was my spiritual progress. And if I were progressing spiritually, everything would fall into place for me in my creative endeavors.
I immediately started to feel better. It still took me a while to get over the pain of it, but I did.
There’s been constant activity in my career, constant opportunities. I think it’s because I learned that lesson early on—to listen and be guided, to be grateful, to be joyous, and to find your inspiration in the grandeur and glory of God’s kingdom, God’s universe. After all, that will never dry up or leave you with disappointment or a sense of being unappreciated. How could it?
