God’s Power
Can we say with assurance that power belongs to God, as we’re told in Psalm 62:11? Can we rely on God’s power? In challenging times, it can be easy to forget where true power lies. We might feel compelled to act out of fear, hate, or greed, or even ignore the needs of our neighbors. These actions ultimately lead to suffering. However, when we remember that God’s power is the true power, and choose to seek the path of goodness, love, and compassion for all, we find greater fulfillment and strength to rely on.
Demonstrating God’s Power
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, was a spiritual activist, as we discussed in a previous blog. She consistently emphasized God’s presence and power. In her writings, she expressed:
My faith in God and in His followers rests in the fact that He is infinite good, and that He gives His followers the opportunity to use their hidden virtues, to put into practice the power which lies concealed in the calm, and which storms awaken to vigor and to victory.
The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 204:1
In this quote, Eddy reminds us that even in difficult times, when challenges or “storms” arise, we have the opportunity to demonstrate the power of God in our lives. By relying on God’s infinite goodness and strength, we can bring forth the virtues that lie within us—virtues of love, courage, and faith—and transform adversity into victory. God’s power not only sustains us but also enables us to reflect and express His goodness in the world.
One infinite God, good
One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, “Love thy neighbor as thyself;” annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, — whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed.
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 340:23
Eddy has clearly stated the healing impact of God’s government and power, which can be relied upon in situations of joy and struggle. She includes the phrase “annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry,” and then she spells out “whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes.” God has given us inalienable rights, and we need to remember daily that His all-power means those rights are protected; this can be seen as expressed in people in all communities and nations working diligently to protect those God-given rights.
Inalienable Rights
God has endowed man with inalienable rights, among which are self-government, reason, and conscience.
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 106:7–9
We need to prayerfully affirm these inalienable rights for everyone and trust that we will all find the necessary resources to meet our needs, understand what is required, and act in good conscience when faced with difficult decisions.
When we approach new situations and encounters with the expectation that everyone involved will act with conscience, expressing understanding and compassion, we often find that those we interact with also live up to this expectation.
Our Daily Prayer to be Governed by God
Daily Prayer. Sect. 4. It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to pray each day: “Thy kingdom come;” let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!
Manual of The Mother Church, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 41:19)

We ask that God’s Word “enrich the affections of all mankind” and “govern them,” recognizing that spiritual understanding has the power to shape not just individual lives, but also communities and nations. We are declaring that power belongs to God. This daily prayer is an act of personal devotion and an invitation for divine guidance to shape our interactions with others and bring healing to the world.
