An Angel Message at Home Plate

I’m a professional singer, and Father’s Day was coming up and I wanted to give a gift to my dad. He loves the Angels, and he loves baseball. So I put in an audition tape to the Angel Stadium. The next week I heard back from them, and they wanted me to sing the national anthem at Angel Stadium.
Well, I was surprised. They told me they would give me four seats behind home plate. I immediately told my dad. I didn’t tell him why I was doing it, but I told him, “We’re gonna go to the Angels game.” He was ecstatic. Then I had to face the fact that I was nervous and that I had never sung to that many people.
So I went to my voice teacher, and we worked on the keys, and she looked at me. She said, “You know, Michelle, this is really a prayer for our nation.” Well, that really resonated because as a Christian Scientist, I’ve used prayer all my life. It makes me feel closer to God. It was like an angel message.
Then I thought back to my Sunday School experience of studying Science and Health with Key the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. In that book, it has a definition for “fear” and in that definition there’s the word “anxiety,” which was definitely what I was feeling. And I’d also looked at that as “Facing Every Adversity Rightly.” And the way to face it was with God’s help and with the joy and love that God has given me. I used that definition, and I overcame a little of my fear, and I felt more connected with God.
Then on the day that we went there, I worked with the organist and went down through the visitor box to home plate. And at home plate, the fear began to well up in me. The sound engineer could tell by looking at my eyes what was going on with me. And he said, “Michelle, they can’t start the game until you sing the song.” And it was like an angel message coming to me, making me realize again why I was there. I was there to spread joy and prayer and to give a gift to my father. Well, that centered me to a point where I thought, “Okay, I can do this.”
As I was singing the national anthem, I felt the joy and the pride for our country and it felt great to give that gift. After I sang the song and went back to my seat, everybody was congratulating me, and I could see the smile on my dad’s face, how proud he was. I knew I’d done a job that would sing to his heart. The Angel Stadium asked me to come back five more times to sing the national anthem. I’m so grateful that God sent the angels for me that day to help me sing that song.
