What Does the Bible Say About Ancestry?

So, What Does the Bible Say About Ancestry?

Have you ever wondered where you come from or explored your family lineage? Many people look at their family history to learn about their ancestors. While family stories can be fun to explore, the Bible tells us that our true identity comes from God, not human ancestors.

Our True Identity in God

The Bible teaches that God is our real Father and Mother. In Malachi 2:10, it says:

Have we not all one father? Hath not one God created us?

This means that no matter what our human ancestry is, we are all created by God. He made each of us spiritual, good, and full of love. If you feel limited by what you might or might not inherit from parents or other family members, you can remember that we are all made in God’s image.

What more does the Bible say about ancestry? While there are plenty of “begats” tracing family lines, the very first chapter of Genesis speaks to something deeper: our shared spiritual heritage as children of God that goes beyond bloodlines.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 1:26,27

When you think of your family going back generations, perhaps you think of their strength, wisdom, or compassion. You may think of their unwavering kindness or strong principles in the face of adversity. If you are concerned that you cannot live up to the example they’ve set, remember that they are children of God—and so are you. You are just as beloved to God, and you can reflect these same qualities. Stop and think, what does the Bible say about ancestry?

Are We Limited by Family History?

Perhaps your family history worries you because illnesses or negative behaviors seem to pass through the generations. But do not be afraid—there is a greater power that you can rely on. Jesus showed us that God, not genetics, determines our life and health. He healed people who had been sick for years and taught his followers to act with selfless love, understanding that God’s love is more powerful than heredity.

Mary Baker Eddy, who established Christian Science, wrote:

Heredity is not a law.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 178

The law of God, the law of good, is the only law, and this law rightly understood destroys the so-called law of heredity.

The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

Psalms 16:6

When we recognize that God is the source of our being, we free ourselves from the notion that our family’s past dictates our health or character. Instead, we can turn to prayer and spiritual understanding to experience healing and renewal. Understanding that every person originates from God, good, allows us to see that sickness, fear, or anger are not a part of their true nature and, therefore, cannot be a part of ours. God’s Love and our reflection of it sets us free. To learn more about physical and emotional healing in Christian Science, see the “Find Out More” section below.

What Do We Pass Down?

Whether we are following the footsteps of our family members or trying to break a cycle, the greatest gifts we can share with others aren’t physical traits but the real gifts of love, kindness, and faith in God. Rather than fearing or focusing on our family health or habits, we can pass down to future generations the understanding that God is our true Parent.

What does the Bible say about ancestry

So what does the Bible say about ancestry? The Bible tells us that our real ancestry is spiritual. Our true identity is not found in DNA, but in our Father-Mother God, our true Parent. This means:

  • We don’t have to be afraid of inherited sickness or problems
  • We are created to be strong, healthy, and free
  • We can feel God’s Love and share it with others

Regardless of our human ancestry, God is always caring for us, guiding us, and helping us recognize who we truly are—beloved children of God.
