What Does Christ Mean at Christmas?

Experience the healing light of Christ this Christmas

Christmas is a season filled with light, music, hope, and joy. We celebrate the birth of Jesus and the promise of peace on earth. But Christmas also invites us to think more deeply—to ask, what does Christ mean?

In Christian Science, Christ is God’s message of love and truth to all people. Christ is the divine light that shows us who we really are as God’s children—good, pure, and loved. Jesus showed this Christ-light better than anyone. Understanding this spiritual meaning deepens the joy and purpose of the Christmas season.

During this season, many people around the world are longing for peace—especially in places affected by war, conflict, and fear. Others are dealing with illness, loss, or loneliness. Christ brings hope to every heart and reminds us that God’s love is always present, offering healing and compassion to all who turn to Him.

What Happened When Jesus Was Born?

The Bible tells us about a quiet but powerful moment. Angels sang of peace. Shepherds hurried to see Jesus. Wise men followed a bright star. Jesus wasn’t born in a palace—he came from a humble place, showing that God’s love reaches every heart, everywhere.

That night was more than a beautiful story of the nativity; it showed that God’s promise of comfort, healing, and salvation is here.

What Does Christ Mean in Christian Science?

Mary Baker Eddy explains that Christ is “the divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 583). This means Christ is God’s power and goodness shining into our lives, destroying fear, sickness, and sin.

In Christian Science, we learn:

  • Christ is God’s truth — Christ shows us what is real and good, helping us see through confusion, fear, or false beliefs to appreciate God’s pure, spiritual reality.
  • Christ is God’s love in action — Christ is not only a message of love, but the power of Love that heals, protects, forgives, and uplifts us.
  • Christ shows us our spiritual identity — Christ helps us understand that we are God’s children—spiritual, safe, loved, and created to express goodness and light.
  • Christ brings healing, comfort, and peace — Christ quiets fear, wipes away sadness, brings strength, and restores harmony in our hearts and lives.
  • Christ did not begin or end with Jesus; Christ is eternal and always present — Jesus showed the Christ in its fullness, but Christ is not limited to one moment or person—it is God’s eternal gift, present with all of us, always.

“Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”

Matthew 28:20

Jesus and the Christ

At Christmas, we celebrate more than Jesus’ birth; we celebrate the presence of divine Love in our world. Jesus was the human man who showed us the Christ perfectly. He healed, forgave, and lifted people. Through his life and works, he showed us that God is Love and that we can feel this Love every day.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” He proved that God’s love can overcome anything—fear, illness, sadness, or hate. When we follow his teachings, we feel that same light and strength within us.

How Does Christ Heal Today?

Christ is always here. Christ is the gentle, guiding presence that assures us we are loved and safe. It brings peace when we pray. It helps us turn to God for answers and healing.

We feel Christ when we:

  • Choose love instead of anger
  • Forgive, as Jesus taught
  • Pray and listen for God’s guidance
  • Help others with compassion and courage
  • Trust that God is always near

Christ brings hope, comfort, and healing to our hearts and to the world.

How Can We Celebrate Christ at Christmas?

We celebrate Jesus’ birth with joy and gratitude—but we also celebrate the ever-present Christ.

We can honor Christ at Christmas by:

  • Letting God’s love guide us
  • Being patient, gentle, and kind
  • Praying for peace in our homes and in the world
  • Seeing the good in each other
  • Sharing hope with those who are struggling

Christmas is not just a day—it is a promise of God’s love always with us.

A Christmas Blessing

This Christmas, may the light of Christ shine in your thoughts and your life. May you feel God’s peace, goodness, and joy each day. When we understand “what does Christ mean,” we discover that Christmas is not only about honoring an historic event, but about celebrating God’s love, which blesses humanity today.

Merry Christmas. Christ is here. God’s love is with you, now and always.

A Poem by Mary Baker Eddy

“Christmas Morn”

Blest Christmas morn, though murky clouds / Pursue thy way, / Thy light was born where storm enshrouds / Nor dawn nor day!

Dear Christ, forever here and near, / No cradle song, / No natal hour and mother’s tear, / To thee belong.

Thou God-idea, Life-encrowned, / The Bethlehem babe— / Beloved, replete, by flesh embound— / Was but thy shade!

Thou gentle beam of living Love, / And deathless Life! / Truth infinite,—so far above / All mortal strife,

Or cruel creed, or earth-born taint: / Fill us today / With all thou art—be thou our saint, / Our stay, alway.

—Christian Science Hymnal, No.  23
