The Story Behind Prayer That Heals in Southern California

The Story Behind Prayer That Heals in Southern California

Wondering what Prayer That Heals is and how it began?

Prayer That Heals is an outreach activity of the Christian Science Joint Media Committee (CSJMC) in Southern California.

It began as a grassroots effort by Christian Science churches to share inspiration and strengthen community in Southern California. Over the years, it has grown into a vibrant online space where members, newcomers, and friends find healing ideas, uplifting messages, and ways to unite in prayer.

Today, PrayerThatHeals.org is a welcoming online home for those across Southern California (and beyond) who love Christian Science and support its healing purpose.

A Digital Doorway to Christian Science in Southern California

When individuals look for inspiration or ways to connect with church activities—locally or online—they may not know where to begin. PrayerThatHeals.org brings these resources together in one easy-to-find place.

Connecting Seekers With Local Churches

It’s also a SoCal–focused online community that brings together local church information, events, healing resources, testimonies, and inspiration in one easy-to-find place. It refers people to the broader online resources offered by The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, MA. Prayer that Heals is a regional doorway that helps newcomers connect with Christian Science activities close to home.

Over the years, it has also become a supportive community for church members, attendees, and seekers—united by the shared purpose at the heart of Christian Science: to bless mankind and share God’s healing love.

A Regional Collaboration Rooted in Love and Service

Where did Prayer That Heals begin?

In 2008, the Ventura County Joint Outreach Committee launched PrayerThatHeals.org with one purpose: to reach sincere seekers online and help them discover Christian Science and their local churches.

At that time, many branch churches did not yet have a strong online presence, and members were looking for ways to connect, unify efforts, and support church healing work digitally. The site became a natural gathering point—offering shared resources, lecture information, Reading Room updates, and encouraging content for members and friends.

It wasn’t fancy—but people found it.
And they kept coming back.

Meeting People Where They Already Are

After that, social media was expanded so the public could connect with Christian Science ideas on platforms they were using every day. Prayer that Heals Facebook grew from 200 users in 2013 to nearly 8,000 by 2026.

How did Prayer That Heals grow?

Around 2010, the Christian Science Society in Solvang reached out with a heartfelt request to expand online outreach to serve the Tri-Counties region—Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo.

Their vision and generous support helped transform PrayerThatHeals.org from a local project into a regional resource. This support allowed outreach to grow in ways no one had imagined, involving active, young Christian Scientists helping us succeed.

As online engagement increased, the CSJMC asked if the Ventura County team could expand this work to serve all of Southern California. With this request, Prayer That Heals joined forces with the CSJMC as part of its broader outreach activities. Together, they invited the San Diego activities to become part of the group, strengthening collaboration across Southern California.

Today, Prayer That Heals continues as an outreach activity of the Christian Science Joint Media Committee, serving Southern California and beyond through the reach of the internet.

Generosity That Transformed Regional Outreach

Solvang and the DeStefano Legacy Fund once again stepped forward. Their generosity made it possible to:

  • build online pages for 30 Christian Science churches and societies
  • link to independent church websites
  • support social media outreach
  • film and livestream inspirational talks
  • offer digital resources in English and Spanish

This expansion created something unique: a welcoming online home for people wanting to learn more about Christian Science and searching for churches in Southern California. It also strengthened a sense of unity and cooperation among branch churches, giving members a shared platform where inspiration and healing ideas could be easily accessed and shared.

Supporting Churches, Members, and Newcomers in Changing Times

Prayer That Heals in Southern California has also helped churches stay connected during times of change. When in-person events were limited due to the pandemic, the initiative supported livestreamed Christian Science lectures, making it possible for thousands to attend online and hear messages of healing from home.

Many members who were home-bound or living far from their branch church found renewed connection through the site’s content, videos, and testimonies. Prayer That Heals became a vital link for maintaining a sense of spiritual community even when physical gathering wasn’t possible.

Today, this online presence continues to support both in-person and remote members, ensuring that healing ideas and shared inspiration remain accessible to all.

How does Prayer That Heals continue to grow?

Today, Prayer That Heals reaches thousands each month through:

  • the website
  • blogs and testimonies
  • Bible lesson & inspirational videos
  • Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Spanish-language outreach on LaOracionQueSana.org
  • Christian Science lectures
  • church and Reading Room events across the region

Many church members tell us how grateful they are to have a central place for inspiration, prayer-based support, and information about regional activities. The site has truly become a spiritual lifeline for our Christian Science community.

In that same spirit, the Ventura County Joint Outreach Committee gathered in 2025 at the Spanish Hills Club in Camarillo. The gathering offered an opportunity for reflection and connection, as participants considered the remarkable growth of this outreach and the many individuals it continues to bless. The committee expressed deep gratitude for the many individuals and followers who support this work and lovingly share its healing message with others.

A Growing Community of Healing and Inspiration

What began as a small Ventura County website is now a vibrant regional resource helping people feel God’s love, explore Christian Science healing, and stay connected with fellow church members and activities across Southern California.
