On this Mother’s Day we celebrate all mother figures. Many may be missing loved family members, however, we can be comforted knowing that God is our Father-Mother, the ultimate comforter and true parent.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, often refers to God as Mother as well as Father, and speaks of the motherhood of God. A mother nestling her babe in her arms with tender, loving care only hints at God’s great love for His creation. All of us can feel embraced by God’s love, which is limitless and always available to receive and to share.
Eddy gives a spiritual view of motherhood, “Love, the divine Principle, is the Father and Mother of the universe, including man.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 256:7) And in her spiritual interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer, she says “Love is reflected in love.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 17:7)
We have opportunities to reflect love and express the motherhood of God every day. It can be expressed in patiently calming a screaming toddler, saying no to a teenager to protect them from danger, or unselfishly helping others without expecting anything in return.
Love is not something put upon a shelf, to be taken down on rare occasions with sugar-tongs and laid on a rose-leaf.
Mary Baker Eddy, Miscellaneous Writings, 250:14
A heart filled with love sees another’s need and responds with a deep sense of God’s mothering qualities. All of us, regardless of gender, are able to express this mothering care because we are the full expression of God.
Let’s all say a special thank you to all who express mothering love, and, as we pray, we can know that the mothering care of divine Love is omnipresent and we reflect that Love.
